Culra Bothy

A video by my mate Neil of our recent outing...

Culra Bothy is basic but clean, comfortable, water and wind tight, and has a warm welcoming atmosphere about it.  Situated in a stunning location it makes an excellent starting point for Ben Alder and other Munros.

The First Great Climb

A few months ago I worked on 'The First Great Climb' by Triple Echo Productions
Theres still a couple of days to watch this on iPlayer - BBC

The story - "Almost 140 years ago, three men crossed from the Hebridean island of Lewis to the north west coast of Scotland. Their aim was audacious: to be the first people to stand on the top of the Great Stack of Handa, an isolated pillar of rock. Failure would have meant certain death. Success, won against all the odds, gave birth to a new sport.
Using the equipment and clothing of the time, three of Scotland's best climbers attempt to emulate a feat that is now almost forgotten."

The Great Climb - BAFTA

The Great Climb programme, which I was lucky enough to be part of has won a Scottish BAFTA for live event coverage.

Sron Uladail

Well done to all involved and a big congratulations to the Triple Echo Productions team who produced the programme for the BBC - well deserved indeed.  After the frustrations of the first attempt Triple Echo were brave to attempt a live climb again, this time it succeeded, and its great to see their efforts recognised.

Not the West Highland Way..

The West Highland Way is just one of Scotland's many long distance walks.  If you fancy something a bit different, with the most incredible scenery and amazing history, then why not take a look at one of these...
  • The Sutherland Trail - 77 miles between Lochinver and Tongue.  Hills climbed include Suliven, Foinaven and Ben Loyal
A view from Foinaven - Sutherland
  • The Sky Trail - 75 miles from Rubha Hunish at the very top of the Trotternish Peninsula on the Isle of Skye to Broadford in the South of the island.  The journey will take you along the Trotternish ridge to the Quiraing and the Storr, through Portree to the Braes, Sligachan and the Cuillin mountains, then onwards to Loch Coruisk, Bla Bheinn and the lost villages of Boreraig and Suisnish.

Filming Cameron - Bla Bheinn, Skye
The Storr - Skye

Both walks are available as Books and DVD's from Mountain Media.

A few years ago I filmed both trails for the Adventure Show, which was broadcast on BBC Scotland - both produced by Triple Echo.  Check out the previews below.

Very bright lights

When I say bright I mean exactly that!!  900 lumens to be precise!
If you like the idea of mountain biking at night (at this time of year there aint much option!) but cant make yourself spend the £200 to £300 it seems to take to get good lights, then check out this.....

Helmet mount option - pic from brightbikelights.com

I recently bought this 900 lumen light (Magicshine mj-808) that can be mounted on a helmet, handle bar or can even be used as a traditional head torch.  The whole package cost me well under £100.  If that sounds a lot then have a look on a well known 'Edinburgh' bike shops website and you'll see a 700 lumen light for £299...
There is also the option of a 1400 lumen light for under £100 too!  I bought the 900 lumen so I can use it for running.
My plan is to buy two of these then it'll all be AWESOME..

You can buy from the first link for about £85 and get them in a couple of days or you can buy them considerably cheaper from the second link, but will have to wait a few weeks for delivery.

GoPro LCD BacPac

Not posted anything in a while – however this is quite exciting!

A screen for the Go Pro camera is everything it was missing. Having mucked up some mountain bike footage at the weekend cos I couldn’t see what I was filming, this will solve all those badly framed shots – well hopefully!
Not available here yet – hopefully sometime soon though.

Cant wait!
